Last October I visited Newport with my niece.
It had been 20 yrs since George and I were last there.
Things hadn't changed much.... that was a good thing
but the tour of The Breakers was much better then I remembered
and it seemed like we were allowed to see more of the rooms
then before.
I can not watch Downton Abbey without thinking of this summer home of the Vanderbilts called the Breakers.
What an era that was.
The show is almost about to start and I don't want to
miss a minute of it.....
the last episode of the season you know!
Oh, almost forgot to tell you the winner of the giveaway!
the winner is
Congratulations

Thank you Carole! I can't wait to pour through it page by wonderful page! These photos of the Breakers are amazing, what an incredible place. I can just picture it full of all of our favorite characters! Thanks again!! t.xoxoxoo
That's a lovely trip down memory lane for me, dear Carole. I remember very well visiting the Breakers and some of the other awesome mansions in Newport. The details inside and outside are spectacular. I could never live and feel comfortable in such a pompous environment but it's a joy to look at. The workmanship is just incredible. It's so amazing that they built such "cottages" to being used only a couple of weeks during the summer and maybe a weekend here and there. Thank you for sharing the wonderful pictures of your trip!
Congratulations to Theresa!

Hi Carole,
Downton Abbey is the BEST programme on TV ..... I don't think that you will have seen the Christmas special .... you have that to come !! We have another similar series called 'Upstairs Downstairs' that you would like....look out for it.
Breakers looks beautiful and somewhere that I want to visit....I must put it on my 'must see' list !!
Well done to Theresa ..... she will have a lovely time, pouring through the beautiful pages of JDL. XXXX
those are so beautiful Carole!! I've missed you - and there simply is no excuse -

I cannot get enough of Downton Abbey. Looking forward already to next season!
Carole, your pictures brought back wonderful memories walking along the coast and all the beautiful mansions. We did it 4 years ago when my cousins were here from Germany.
It was perfect. We stayed at an intimate historic hotel, the Inn at Newport Beach, the only beachfront hotel. It was heavenly!
I think, we need to repeat this, hubby and I.
Many hugs, Evi
So many beautiful photos Carole!
I haven't been to Newport in over 30 years....still so grand!
Love that last shot with the pink wild rose before the sea...

What a fantastic building dear Carole- and stunning surroundings-must have been a great experience seing it for real-
I hope they will show the number 2Downton Abbey in Denmark, too.

Oh I love your post. I live about 1/2 an hour from Newport. We often take our middle school classes to Marble House in the spring. Stunning. I, like you, often think of what life must have been like. I am also hooked on Downton Abbey. Didn't you love the behind the scenes footage?
So beautiful!! I would love to visit there someday :)
Blessings,
Marcia
Beautiful! It does look like DA.
I don't like the words with the music, just the music!
September I think I will have a Downton Abbey party when Season 3 starts!
Do you think Patrick will come back, or was he a fake?
Oh my friend-- I love Newport!! When we were there-- my husband and I did the big walk that took us by the the beautiful homes. We finished the walk in the late evening- almost dark. We spotted a restaurant close by situated on the cliffs. We got there just as they were closing and they agreed to seat us anyway. They prepared a table for us out on the terrace overlooking the crashing surf. It was dark and they encircled our table and the terrace wall with candles. We were the only ones there--- it was the most romantic dinner we've ever had--
Your photos of the Breakers are spectacular. Next trip- I must be sure to take the tour. You know we live the Biltmore here close to us-- I can only imagine the opulence of the summer home!
Guess I need to go back--

What will we do until the next season of Downton Abbey?
I guess I need to get on the Abbey bandwagon!
Have you been to the Biltmore House in Asheville NC where the Vanderbilts southern mansion is located? My parents live there and I can never get enough of the beautiful grounds, architecture and history. I will have to make vacation plans to so see this one!

I'm so sad we have to wait for Season 3! I loved how they ended 2, though. We'll see how things progress from here. Thanks for the beautiful pictures from Newport. When we lived outside Boston we visited there several times. I love the Rugosa Rose picture! They are one hardy rose!
