Project Genesis

Ok this is a big stretch for my blog.

To talk about something of substance....something that might make you think about our world and Mother Earth and what we are doing to her.

I'm happy to participate in

the brain child of my friend Suzan
of old gray mare

We met back when I first started doing White Wednesday.
Because of a glitch with her blog not updating properly and blogger not letting me
get to her site we lost contact for awhile.
darn blogger gods!!! It wasn't until sweet June of Laughing with Angels did a post about
a gift the she received from Suzan that I rediscovered her again.
I was so thrilled and apologized for not having been by for awhile.

We started to email each other and found we had a lot in common,
one of them being that we sometimes wanted to talk about more then
just decorating, flowers and just the pretty things in our lives.
To keep our planet pretty and happy we have to take care of it.

Project Genesis is an opportunity to start a dialogue about how we can all make a difference even in a small way to help our planet.
I know we all wonder what we can do besides recycle our trash,
which seems simple enough but I still have friends that don't even do that!!!!!
I won't mention any names because they occasionally read my blog:))

Ever since Suzan wanted to start this discussion the first thing that came to mind
for me
was what we deal with everyday.

Our PLASTIC TRAYS

Do you have any idea how much plastic we use???

well, I don't really know the answer to that either....that's George's department.
Gee, he has to order something....it's just not that interesting to me
so I leave it up to him.....
that, and stone, mulch, soil and a bunch of other boring products.
He doesn't mind really.

Ok I know this isn't a big deal and it's not going to change the world over night but it's a start.

It's really simple

when you go to your garden center bring an old box small tarp or even recycle an old tray.

Years ago used I'd have an old gentleman that would bring in his own plastic tray.
You only have to keep it there for the time you usually buy your flowers.

With all the emphasis on saving on plastic bags at the grocery stores why is it that

people still reach for a PLASTIC tray to carry 2 plants?

We do encourage our customers to return their pots and trays to us.
and that's a start.

The problem is that they return pots from other places and they don't fit our trays.
A problem in this industry is that there are just too many sizes.
You may not have been aware of this but a few years ago the

The National Bureau of Weights and Measures had to step in and make new
regulations about the inconsistencies in what we all call a gallon pot, a 10" pot, a 6" pot, a quart etc.

That's why you see a sticker of the actually volume size on the pots now.

oh you never noticed!!! it's there trust me
or else the grower
runs the risk of getting fined up to $5000.

I know seems weird but a gallon pot is not a gallon size!!!

Are you still there???

stay with me:))

My point is that there is beginning to be an end to the madness of all these pots and containers and in
answer to all the waste of pots there is discussion finally about
making the pots more standardized.

Every ones gallon pot will all be the same.....so when I get a pot from

dare I say...... Home Depot.

I can reuse it

wash and sanitize it first but, it doesn't have to go to the trash.

Granted now they can go in with the plastic recycling but it still TAKES ENERGY to
turn it into something else.

I found Jelly's secret napping spot....by the trays and pots
on the bench...wonder if I could fit in there and take a nap???

I really need a bed around here for some power naps.

Ok, back to what I was talking about.

It may be a long time before the industry and the bureau makes the necessary changes
so next time you go to buy some plants remember to keep your trays
and use them over and over again or return them so they can recycle them,
or better yet don't use any at all!
You go to the grocery store with your recycled bags
...go to the garden center prepared too.

Now don't forget to visit Suzan and check out her great ideas as well as the other
participants of Project Genesis.
I'm happy to be part of this blog party and hope you consider
sharing your ideas too.

Carole, thanks for the post. As you already know I am a avid gardener. Due to the fact I live in a very rual area I do not have garbage service.............so I early on used and saved the plastice pots. One thing I do is shredd or cut up small pots and use as filler in my very large pots b/4 I place dirt. I also try to buy plants that have peat pots only or paper that way they go in the ground when I plant them..............Since I go to the dump I can place some plastic pots in a recycle container.............I not only do this for my plants but try on all things................it may take extra time but in the long run I feel good about what I am doing. Have a wonderful 4th. XO MARY

I'm with you & Suzan. So are my friends here in the DC-area. We take our own & also the nurseries we buy from (mostly them, now that I don't have a garden), ask people to return them. And people do (they tell me). To add on to Theresa above, every little bit does absolutely help. It makes me crazy when people don't recycle. Esp. if they live in an area like mine: it's so dang easy that there's no excuse.

Thanks so much for writing about this, Carole.

(Also, I hope you have a lovely Fourth.)

Hi Carole,
Great Idea! There are collapsible nylon boxes that I have used at nurseries. They are great and have handles to carry the plants into the house, are a little taller so plants don't fall over, and they don't take up much room in the small trunk of my car. I'll bet if you carried something like this in your greenhouse, many people would use them:)

o.k...that is good news that the pots are being standardized!! as a gardener (in the biz) i have often wondered and chagrinned at the darn pots not fitting into the trays! this will make reusing much easier for everyone...and when it is easier, people will be more prone to recycle! love your graphic black and white photos today...especially the sleeping kitty!!

YIKES! this makes me think about all of the plastic pots I've tossed in the trash around here. I'll certainly be more conscious of it from now on. Love that cute pic. of Jelly! We had never really thought of it until recently, but every time Heather paints a piece of used furniture for someone, she's helping to recycle. Renewing and reusing something old and sometimes previously discarded.

I´m happy you brought this up.
Even if many people think of this allready, we have to become more...
More people has to start thinking about the environment.
Thank you for making a great post!

Have a wonderful day!

I have often wondered about this myself. I have a stack of these in my garage. I am going to ask my local greenhouse if they would want them back?
Thanks for sharing.

Carol, we always have a plastic tarpe and a cardboard box in the car. When I have gotten the plastic trays in the past, I have used them again and again. I like the cut-down cardboard boxes that some nurseries give you.
I also recycle the pots and yes, it will be a pleasure when all this gets standardized.
They will fit into each other neatly!

HI Carole.. well I think this is an interesting issue you have brought up.. no idea about the pot/tray sizes here.. but everything else seems to be different sizes for different manufacturers.. drives me nuts that I can't just interchange items.. and forces us to constantly buy new!!

Great post... and love kitty sleeping there... she's got the right idea.. Have a lovely weekend. xxx Julie

Hey Carole, what a great idea. When I buy a plant I don't take a try with me, but I will now. I do keep the pots that they come in because I'm always transplanting something to share with someone, or let it root in a bit before I put it in the ground.
This is such an important discussion. I hope we all make the effort to make a difference.
I've never seen such beautiful pictures of plastic in my life!!! Thank you for thinking I'm sweet, cause that's just what I think of you!:))

Hi Carole, thanks for stopping by my place. It is still amazing to me that folks don't think twice about throwing things that can be reused and repurposed in so many ways. Glad to see that you are jump starting this in your own garden center. We all gotta start somewhere with what we know, right! Best wishes for a beautiful day. Kitty looks so cozy and comfortable. :) Tammy

I have a stack of trays and pots in the garden house that I just couldn't throw away. Yippee...now I know what to do with them. Who Knew? Such a simple idea, but the great ones usually are.

Hi Carole, That's a great idea! We don't have a garden though but we always use our own muslin or burlap bags for grocery shopping. I wish we could avoid all that plastic trash the groceries are sold in but since this is hardly possible we at least seperate all the waste for recycling. Sometimes the packaging is pretty cool and can be used for some artwork. That's my favorite kind of recycling.
Have a great weekend!
Hugs to you, dear friend,
Julia

Excellent reminder! I do find it unsettling how quickly the plastic pots and trays pile up in the spring. I've had an alternate idea. I have a reusable tote with a reinforced bottom, puchased at a pet food store as a sturdy carrier of cans. It occurs to me that it would be a grand bag to bring plants home in. I could take the plants out of their pots, leave those at the nursery, and plant my naked newcomers immediately upon arriving home. A quick shake out of the bag, and I'm ready for the next time!
Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Carole,

I think it is great that we have become so aware of recycling and thinking differently about how we go about things.
I take my plastic pots and trays back to the garden center and always use my own bags for all the groceries.
Great post and yes, we all need to get behind to make the little bit of a difference.

Happy weekend

Hi Carole,
We have five trays we reuse over and over. They travel with me all over the place in the back of my car. Hey, I can't believe there are folks out there that don't recycle, it's so easy to do and it's just lazy not to... just going to say it, cause it's true!

Have a happy 4th of July!

I think about all the plastic everytime I bring home plants from the garden center. Just hate the thought of the tons of it that is in the landfills. I will remember next time to bring mine back.

I like your post! I have stacks of plastic pots not knowing what to do with them and yet not wanting to just toss them out.
