White Wednesday in Essex

What a beautiful day it was today.
Yes it was hot and humid
but we were closed today!
Tuesdays we are closed in the month of August.
YAY!!!
So after we worked the afternoon we headed to Essex.
Actually we were going to an antique store along the border of
Old Saybrook and Essex and with 15 minutes to spare
I managed to make it in the door before they closed.
wwhhhooooo!
and I still had enough time to pick up a couple of things.
I'll share what I bought in the next post.
Meanwhile I want to show you just a little of Essex.
This is the Ct. River Museum
What a beautiful spot.
They have events that you can check out on their site.
We went to a great wine tasting there a few years ago.
Discovered a great wine from Chili that was only $7 that night.
We bought a couple of cases thru the years.
I think they don't make it anymore.
Darn!

This is one of my favorite houses along Main Street.

This house always get photographed a lot by tourists

And now by me. I did feel like a tourist taking these but I've always wanted to.

One lady asked me what the date was on the house.
I couldn't read it either but I magnified it on my camera.
1733

This birdhouse looks much too clean to be occupied and maybe
too many prying eyes for some birds. The landscaping is formal
with the rows of trimmed boxwood.
Around the pole is what looks like barberry with thorny branches
maybe to keep anything from crawling up the pole....
or maybe not.

One thing I know is that this birdhouse really makes this front yard special.

This is "River" a shop up on the other end of Main Street.
It was closed today but I got this picture by pressing my lense against the door!
Isn't it gorgeous?
Well, I drew so much attention to myself that the lady (Bobbie) who
works there and had come in to water the plants came to the door.
How embarrassing!
She was lovely and really didn't seem to mind.
I told her who I was and that I knew Joe(the owner).
She told me the sad news that they were closing!
He is now busy with doing Weddings for clients in the area and
has decided he didn't need the shop anymore.
Check out his incredible work
Bobbie was nice enough to let me take some pictures inside so I'll
post those in the next post!
I'm joining my friend Kathleen at Faded Charm
for White Wednesday.
Happy Wednesday everyone!
xxx

Hi sweet Carole, I'm glad to hear that you had a day off to do some fun things. Essex is very lovely. When I remember correctly, we bought a silver plated tray in an antique shop on the Main Street. The house is beautiful, I just wouldn't like to clean the windows, lol. The birdhouse really looks like it never had a bird move it. Maybe the birds don't like multi-family homes ;-).
Have a wonderful Wednesday!
xoxo,
Julia

oh that shop! The River..what a great name. Will you be going to the going out of business sale? I think I would fight you for some of those urns, my dear friend.

I love your favorite house too but shame on me, my first thought was how much work trimming the boxwood would be. I think I'm getting old..no wait..I AM old!

How's the workout coming along? hmmm ; -0

I didn't know there was an Essex in CT. I've only been to the one in Massachusetts. This one appears a bit more upscale. Wonderful town. Looking forward to more photos!

that is the one of the cutest houses ever!! so sweet and simple. and the structured landscaping with the unexpected bird house (for martins, i assume)... adoreable. i don't usually care for barberry, but what a great idea to keep the critters away! the "river" looks like my kinda place...how unusual to have windows on opposite sides? love their birdbaths...too bad they are closing. glad you got a day off, sweety!

Hi Carole! Oh, how I love a good field trip! (sigh!) There's nothing like those east coast homes and antiques stores. That house is to die for and I love the neatly clipped boxwood hugging the beautiful birdhouse. (bigger sigh!) And that shop? Wow.....too bad they're closing. I'd certainly keep an eye out for a sale....!

Glad to hear that you got a little vaca day out and about!

Essex is a beautiful place Carole. I can definitely see why that house is photographed. Of course, it is the birdhouse that I like best.

I wanted to tell you that I loved the barn tour. I think your area has the most beautiful barns in the US. It seems that they have had more care than a lot of the barns in the west. So many of ours are crumbling and rotting. It is so sad to see. I love barns and all they did to serve the farmer and the animals they kept.
